How To Elevate User Experience With Dashboard Design

Dashboards are an important part of UX/UI design for various web applications and software as a service (SaaS) platforms. They provide users with valuable data visualizations of key performance indicators (KPIs) to facilitate informed decision-making. In this article, I explore different types of dashboards and dashboard UI designs and deep-dive into the designs of leading products. By understanding dashboard design principles, you can create user-friendly interfaces that effectively communicate essential data to your users.

Understanding Dashboards

Dashboards are essential components for various products. They enable users to monitor KPIs, track progress, and maintain a high-level performance overview. By incorporating dashboards, you can help users visualize metrics, reinforce priorities, and improve decision-making. 

Avoid focusing solely on design trends or fancy graphs by prioritizing user needs with actual data and users to solve real problems. Dashboards are crucial in product design, and understanding their design is vital for creating effective interfaces.

The Iterative Dashboard Design Process

Before designing a dashboard, ask yourself, “What problem am I solving for the user?” Seek to understand the users’ needs, define the dashboard’s purpose, and identify the target audience. 

Starting with the most important data, gradually add complexity while ensuring usability. Like with other designs, test prototypes with real users, iterating based on their feedback to refine and improve the dashboard’s design. 

I conduct user research to gather valuable insights that address questions such as:

  • Which elements are most or least useful?
  • Are there any missing features or data points?
  • How has the dashboard impacted their workflow?

By iterating and improving the dashboard based on user feedback, you can ensure it continuously evolves according to their needs.

Essential Dashboard Design Principles

I found that adhering to the following principles contributes to creating effective and user-friendly dashboards and more: 

  • Customizability: Tailor dashboard layouts and data views to users’ preferences (and requirements) to enhance personalization.
  • Accessibility: Ensure all key information is easily accessible with a single click, improving usability and reducing user frustration.
  • Clarity: Use clear visualizations and concise labels to facilitate quick understanding, helping users grasp information efficiently.
  • Consistency: Maintain consistent design patterns and interactions throughout the dashboard to create a cohesive user experience.
  • Scalability: Design dashboards with adaptability in mind to accommodate growing data and evolving user needs.
  • Information hierarchy: Organize and present information logically, guiding users through the data and focusing on the most critical aspects.

Creating a Dashboard on Hotjar

Hotjar offers dashboards for page issues, new releases, and marketing campaigns. I can create a new dashboard for these purposes or design a custom one. Each option provides a brief visualization of the expected dashboard. Overall, the Dashboards page balances navigation, filters, and visual appeal. 

After clicking “Create Dashboard,” a toast notification confirms its creation. This minimizes visual clutter while conveying the necessary information. It also serves as a good reminder that dashboard design starts before users see the actual dashboard. By designing a tailored flow for creating dashboards, you can set your users up for success.

A Salesforce Dashboard Example

Salesforce offers its users dashboards to track KPIs, monitor sales performance, and analyze customer data. Salesforce’s dashboard categories include recent, private, and more. 

When creating a new dashboard on Salesforce, I received less guidance than from Hotjar’s preset examples. This process involved optionally adding a description or folder, both of which could be helpful for later sorting and accessing. 

Once created, adding components felt a little overwhelming. However, after understanding the process, I could choose the display format and adjust settings like axes and units. A helpful real-time preview within the modal provided feedback, such as “We can’t draw this chart because there is no data.”

When designing dashboards, consider the entire user journey, focusing on both the data input process and the final visualization. Streamlining these aspects can enhance the overall user experience and make it easier for users to create, manage, and understand their dashboards.

Responsive Dashboard Design

While I typically associate dashboards with desktop displays, it’s crucial to consider responsiveness when designing across devices. It can be harder to imagine dashboards in the traditional sense on mobile compared to website dashboards. While all the components may still need to be accessed, only one visualization can typically be displayed at a time. 

Responsive dashboard design shares similarities with responsive logo design, where designers must adapt visual elements to different contexts while preserving representative content. Despite challenges in translating desktop dashboards to smaller screens, designers must find innovative solutions to maintain usability. 

Over 50% of users are estimated to access content through mobile devices, highlighting the need for responsive design. Furthermore, even desktop/web apps require responsiveness for various screen sizes and orientations. 

Designers should consider platform-specific requirements when creating responsive dashboards. These include screen sizes, touch targets, and platform-specific UI guidelines like Material Design for Android or Human Interface Guidelines for iOS. By doing so, you ensure a seamless user experience across different devices. 

Adapting layouts, font sizes, and touch targets helps ensure dashboards remain responsive and user-friendly across various devices. Adjusting these elements to accommodate different screen sizes allows you to create more accessible interfaces for a broader audience.

Selecting the Right Type of Dashboard

There are two primary types of dashboards you might be designing: analytical and operational. 

Analytical dashboards focus on data analysis, trend identification, and longer-term strategic planning. Some examples of analytical dashboards I’ve found include: 

  • Marketing: A dashboard for a quarterly performance review
  • Financial analysis: Quarterly reports comparing revenue, expenses, and profits over time
  • Sales performance: Annual sales dashboard showcasing regional sales, top-performing products, and sales growth trends
  • Website performance: Monthly dashboard tracking website traffic, user engagement, and conversion rates

Operational dashboards emphasize real-time monitoring, progress tracking, and operational efficiency. Examples of operational dashboards I’ve found include: 

  • Customer support: A dashboard tracking daily ticket resolution times
  • Manufacturing: A factory floor dashboard displaying real-time production status, machine performance, and worker productivity
  • Social media monitoring: Real-time tracking of social media mentions, user sentiment, and post engagement for crisis management and community engagement
  • IT infrastructure: A dashboard for monitoring server uptime, network performance, and security threats

It’s also possible to categorize dashboards in other ways or even have hybrid dashboards that combine elements of both. Some additional types or variations of dashboards I’ve found include:

  • Strategic dashboards: Used for high-level decision-making, often including long-term goals, industry trends, and competitor analysis
  • Tactical dashboards: Designed to support day-to-day operations and track progress toward short-term goals
  • Balanced scorecard dashboards: Incorporate a mix of financial and non-financial metrics, providing a holistic view of an organization’s performance

Dashboard Design Tips and Techniques

From what I’ve seen, following these tips can lead to successful dashboard designs: 

  • Balance content and whitespace for better readability. 
  • Repetition can be useful for displaying data consistently, ensuring users can quickly understand and compare information.
  • Use appropriate data visualizations to communicate insights effectively, focusing on selecting the right chart types based on the data and desired insights.
  • Prioritize data clarity by using concise labels and avoiding excessive complexity in visual representations.
  • Maintain visual consistency throughout the dashboard to create a cohesive user experience, including consistent font styles, colors, and iconography.
  • Use color coding to highlight critical information or draw attention to specific data while ensuring the color palette is inclusive for all users.

 Integrating Interactive Elements in Dashboards

I’ve also found that the following interactive elements can enhance user engagement and data exploration in dashboards.

  • Drill-down capabilities allow users to explore more detailed information by clicking on specific data points.
  • Tooltips provide additional context or explanations when hovering over a data point or visual element.
  • Dynamic filters enable users to customize the dashboard view based on selected criteria.

Thoughtfully integrating interactive elements enhances user engagement, encourages a deeper understanding of the presented data, and fosters data-driven decision-making.

Designing Accessible Dashboards for Diverse User Groups

Creating dashboards that cater to users with different abilities, language preferences, and cultural backgrounds ensures an inclusive experience. Best practices for dashboard design I’ve seen include text alternatives for visual elements, ensuring sufficient color contrast, and supporting screen reader compatibility.

Also, consider implementing localization and internationalization strategies to address language preferences and cultural backgrounds, ensuring dashboards cater to their diverse user base. For example, be sure to adapt any visualizations to account for cultural differences in color perception or symbol interpretation.

Additional Data Visualization Tips

Dashboard design encompasses overall layout and structure, while data visualization focuses on representing data effectively. However, both dashboard design and data visualization share the goal of effectively communicating information. This requires careful consideration of the audience, data types, and overall design principles.

Suitable visualizations for different data types and goals are crucial. Consider line charts, bar graphs, heat maps, and pie charts to convey trends and comparisons. 

Both dashboard design and data visualization benefit from considering the data’s purpose and audience. Remember to use clear, concise labels and legends and avoid unnecessary complexity.

Combining Dashboards With Other UI Components

In designing a dashboard, the dashboard is often not the only thing on the screen. Integrate dashboards with other elements, such as navigation menus, filters, and search bars, for a seamless user experience. Navigation menus can allow easier dashboard exploration, filters can facilitate easier data refinement, and search bars can allow finding specific data points. 

I’ve found that dashboards look best when prioritizing elements based on user needs and effectively using whitespace. Maintaining visual consistency with the dashboard’s overall design helps achieve a balanced and organized layout when combining dashboards with other UI components.

Dashboard Performance Optimization

Dashboard performance is an important metric to optimize for, as it impacts user experience, decision-making, and overall efficiency. Slow loading times or unresponsive dashboards can frustrate users and hinder productivity. Consider minimizing unnecessary data fetches, compressing large data sets, and employing lazy loading techniques toward optimization. 

Dashboard performance optimization should also be a consideration across different devices and platforms. Some device-specific optimization strategies include responsive design and implementing adaptive layouts.

Once you’re ready to start designing, Figma can be a helpful tool for prototyping interfaces. You can leverage free dashboard design templates and components from the Figma community for inspiration. 

If your company has a design system, you can reuse its components in dashboard design as they typically follow atomic design principles. This approach allows for seamless integration within your product and can help maintain an organized design hierarchy.
