Brands with memorable logos make an impact, and it’s arguable that a sports brand’s logo is the most recognizable. Just think of the NBA logo, which is one of the most well-known images within the sports industry. 

In today’s guide, we’ll focus on the Super Bowl logo. More specifically, we’ll explore the Super Bowl logo color theory. Through our exploration of Super Bowl logos, you’ll learn how big-name brands leverage color theory to create engaging designs.

Explaining the Conspiracy Theory: Super Bowl Logo Colors 

First things first. Let’s address the elephant in the room – the conspiracy theory. Super Bowl logo colors are, surprisingly, at the center of this theory.

Supposedly, the Super Bowl logo’s colors mirror those of the two teams that will play in the championship games. Interestingly enough, this conspiracy theory is not new. 

In fact, the origins of this theory date back to Super Bowl LVI at the SoFi Stadium. If you recall, that logo celebrated warm colors (red, orange, and yellow). Incidentally, the two teams up for the championship were the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. 

If you didn’t already know, the colors of the Los Angeles Rams are blue, gold, white, and, most notably, yellow. On the other hand, the Cincinnati Bengals sport black, white, and, intriguingly, dark orange. 

The next year, with Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona, the logo was red and green. In an amazing coincidence, the Kansas City Chiefs went on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles. Needless to say, theorists immediately saw the parallels between the Chiefs’ red and the Eagles’ green team colors. 

That brings us to now with Super Bowl LVIII, with Las Vegas serving as the host city. Purple and red colors ornament the 2024 Super Bowl’s logo. As you can imagine, it’s causing a lot of speculation. 

Many who believe the theory predicts that these colors represent the top two teams of the 2023 regular season. After all, the Baltimore Ravens flaunt purple, while the San Francisco 49ers boast red. 

The key takeaway is that when you combine passion with logo design, people will remember and talk about it. With that in mind, let’s really get into the ins and outs behind the Super Bowl logo colors theory.

NFL Super Bowl Logo: Color Theory

Conspiracies aside, there’s a lot to learn by examining the NFL Super Bowl logo color theory.

Super Bowl LVI 

From our discussion of the Super Bowl color logo theory, you know about Super Bowl LVI. 

Using color psychology, you know that the red, orange, and yellow colors in the Super Bowl LVI logo represent energy. Red speaks to passion and power, orange reflects confidence and optimism, and yellow symbolizes happiness. 

You’ll notice that the yellow colors are paler than the others, displaying the use of a tint. This pays homage to the host city’s (California) beautiful beaches and sunny weather, a staple of California’s identity. Clearly, this logo wants viewers to feel a sense of pride, which fits nicely with red’s association with passion. 

Notice the analogous nature of the color scheme, which adds a sense of fluidity to the design. It may not be as memorable as a high-contrasting logo, but it is arguably more visually satisfying. 

Super Bowl LVII

Celebrating contrast, the Super Bowl LVII logo leverages complementary colors, red and green. What’s intriguing about this logo is that it’s not just the colors that are contrasting. 

Bold shades and subtle tints add a sense of depth to the logo’s design. This use of black and white makes it appear as if a bright light is shining from within the logo. 

This illusion gives users a sense of hope, encouraging them to immerse themselves more in the games in support. Combine this with the connotations of green, which relate to growth and harmony. In the context of sports, this growth and harmony translate to stellar athletic performances and true sportsmanship. 

Overall, when put together, the illusion and the colors make users feel optimistic about Super Bowl LVII.

Super Bowl LVIII

Gradually, the color red has become a subtler component of the Super Bowl’s logos. With Super Bowl LVIII, red takes a backseat to allow a rich, dark purple hue to the spotlight. 

Many people associate purple with mystery, magic, and royalty. Given the conspiracies surrounding the Super Bowl’s logos, it seems its designers are playing into the mystery of the rumors. Some users may find this to be a humorous move, but others may find it a touch deceptive. 

Like Super Bowl LVII, the designers use shade and tint to create an illustration of Las Vegas landmarks and buildings. All in all, this was a creative way to celebrate the 2024 Super Bowl’s host city respectfully. 

That said, considering how close purple and red are on the color wheel, it’s not as impactful as LVII’s logo. The contrast is too soft to be powerful, and the use of dark purple can potentially convey the wrong message.
