UI designers and graphic designers all around the world would feel lost without visual inspiration. However, thanks to modern generative AI-powered services, visual inspiration isn’t hard to come by anymore.

Let’s focus on one generative AI platform in particular – Midjourney. Today is the day that you’ll learn what Midjourney is and how to use Midjourney effectively.

What Is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an image generator that can turn something as basic as a text prompt into images/art. It’s so popular that it’s now one of the biggest names in the world of machine learning-based image generation.

Two notable features of Midjourney have contributed to its success.

For starters, it’s a generative AI-powered platform that utilizes advanced algorithms. These algorithms ensure that the images you receive are contextually relevant to the prompts you provide.

You can imagine that, because of this, Midjourney enables its users to take advantage of endless opportunities for creative expression.

The second most compelling feature of Midjourney is that you don’t need any specialized software or hardware to use it. It works entirely through Discord, so the Discord app is all you need.

Is It Possible To Learn How To Use Midjourney for Free?

Given that Midjourney is up there with the likes of DALL-E, it’s natural to assume that it is also free.

So, can you learn how to use Midjourney for free?

Unfortunately, in April 2023, Midjourney suspended its free trial program. As of June 2024, you’ll need a subscription plan to use Midjourney.

Let’s look at the subscription plans that Midjourney currently offers.

  1. The Basic Plan: This plan allows you to pay $10 a month or $96 a year. If you opt to subscribe to this plan, you’ll receive 3.3 hours of fast GPU time a month. Like the other plans, you can purchase extra GPU time at $4 per hour, but doing so can be costly.
  2. The Standard Plan: Choosing this plan means paying $30 a month or $288 a year. For this subscription, you’ll get 15 hours of fast GPU time a month and unlimited Relax GPU time.
  3. The Pro Plan: The pro plan will cost you either $60 a month or $576 a year. With the Pro Plan, you’ll receive 30 hours a month of fast GPU time. Like the Standard Plan, you also have unlimited Relax GPU time at your disposal.
  4. The Mega Plan: The most expensive plan, the Mega package, costs $120 a month. Of course, like the other plans, you have the option to pay $1152 for an annual subscription. You can access 60 hours of fast GPU time a month and, of course, unlimited Relax GPU time.

Midjourney: Relax Mode vs Fast Mode

To understand what you’re getting for your money, you need to know about Midjourney’s Relax and Fast modes.

Midjourney’s Fast mode aims to give users access to a GPU instantly. If you use Relax mode, this means that your jobs will end up in a queue. This means that you’ll have to wait between 0-10 minutes per job until GPUs become available.

For the average job, it takes roughly one minute of GPU time to create an image. But please note that if you want to upscale an image or use non-standard aspect ratios, you could wait longer.

How To Use Midjourney on Discord: A Straightforward Guide

Now that you know a little more about Midjourney, we can get down to the brass tacks.

Below, we’ve revealed how to use Midjourney on Discord – it’s more straightforward than you might think.

1. Joining the Midjounery Discord Server

First, you’ll need a Discord account. If you don’t already have one, you can easily register for a free account on Discord’s website.

Once you have set up your Discord account, head over to Midjourney’s official website. From here, you need to locate the Join the Beta button. You can find this button on the right-hand side of the screen.

Discord will automatically pop up after you click this button, containing your invite to the Midjourney server. Now, you need to click the purple, rectangular button that reads Join Midjourney

Once you then verify that you are indeed human, you’ll have access to Midjourney’s server.

2. Accepting Midjourney’s Terms of Service

Before you start embracing the power of UI design/graphic design, you need to find and accept Midjourney’s ToS (Terms of Service).

To find Midjourney’s ToS, simply scroll through the server’s channels until you come across the ones titled Newcomer Rooms. Click any of the channels titled newbies and simply send a message.

The Midjourney Bot will then appear, reminding you that you need to accept Midjourney’s terms of service. From here, all you need to do is click on the green Accept ToS button.

3. Choosing Your Subscription Plan

The next step involves choosing one of the subscription plans that we mentioned earlier. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go back to one of the newbies’ text channels and type /subscribe in the message input field.
  2. You’ll receive a personal link from the Midjourney Bot.
  3. You’ll see a button that reads Open subscription page. Click on it.
  4. Choose your desired subscription package.

From here, all you need to do is enter your card details and wait for Midjounrey to confirm your subscription.

4. Generating Your Artwork

Now, you’ll want to head back to one of the newbies’ text channels.

In the message box, enter the /imagine command, which you’ll follow up with your prompt. For instance, you could write, “/imagine a bright red butterfly flying across a field of tulips during a sunny day.”

Midjourney will then generate the image based on your prompt.

We recommend writing prompts that are as simple and specific to receive the best results. Now, all you need to do is upscale, edit, and save your images!

How To Edit Images in Midjounrey

It’s easy to say you need to edit your images. But that won’t help you if you don’t know how to edit images in Midjourney in the first place.

Here’s how you can edit your images in Midjounrey.

1. Upload Your Original Prompt

In the newbie’s text channel, click on the circular + button next to your message box.

Find your original prompt and upload it, then click Enter on your keyboard to share it in the chat. Open the image and right-click it to obtain the link.

2. Edit Your Prompt

As you did before, you need to type out the /imagine command in the message box. Then, you must paste the URL of the image that you copied in the previous step.

Now, you need to add in the specific edits you want Midjourney to generate.

You can use Midjourney to modify nearly any aspect of your image, including style, color, lighting, and size.

But in order to get accurate results, you’ll need to use precise language.

For instance, let’s say you wanted to change the style of your image. You’d have to use words like “monochrome,” “photorealistic,” or “vintage.”

For website or mobile app design, you should end up with something like this:

“/imagine [image URL] modern website design landing page for a hair product company, vintage, UX, UI, red and white colors.”

  4. Midjourney also makes experimenting with typographic elements incredibly easy. You can see how different fonts, font colors, and font sizes change the look of your user interfaces.
  5. Midjourney can make your CTAs more eye-catching and dynamic, helping you boost your conversion rates
  6. Because Midjourney’s prompts are precise in nature, you can create more personalized user interfaces. Needless to say, hyper-personalization is great for user engagement and retention rates.
